First steps:

Make a list of everything you have ever done; work experience, school, clubs, volunteering, hobbies, interests and the dates you did them.

What job are you applying for? Make a list of the skills they are looking for and the personality traits they want. (Do they want someone who works with people, someone who sticks to deadlines etc.?).

  • Writing your Personal Statement:

    • It should be 3 or 4 sentences long and comes at the beginning of your CV.
      • One sentence on what you are doing now - are you job hunting or are you working part time?
      • One sentence about what kind of job you are looking for. Are you looking to go into sales, construction, IT etc.?
      • What is your motivation? Where do you want to end up? Be realistic about it!
    • It should give an idea about who you are as a person and what your motivations are.
    • It should be written in full sentences.
  • Top Tips For Making A Good CV

    • No longer than 2 sides of A4.
    • Make sure that it is a record of your skills, experiences and qualifications.
    • Tell the truth.
    • Show how to contact you (include your name, contact address, email address and phone number).
    • There should be not be any mistakes or typos (get as many people as you can to check it over!).
    • Don’t be modest. No one else will tell them what you can do. As a general rule you should be a little bit embarrassed when you show your CV to someone you know. You have to be your own biggest cheer leader.
    • Try to avoid negative words like “not”, “although” and “despite”
    • Get as many people as you can to check it - at least two or three!
    • It should show a bit of who you are as a person. This comes in the personal statement at the beginning.
  • Once you've written it

    There should not be a single mistake in what you write or a typo.
